They Said It or Wrote It: Bad Speech Can Lose Your Job Most of you cannot even remember the chain discount department store called “Ayr-Way.” Forty 40 some years ago being fired from there for bad pronunciation. No, not my bad pronunciation; I was fired from there because of a clients bad pronunciation. I was stocking shelves in the auto department when a man asked about “them thar wahrs.” I pondered, and asked him several times what he was after. It finally dawned on me what “wahrs” was. “Oh,” I said, “ You mean wires.” All that remained was to determine what kind of wires he wanted, but he became angry, and went to the manager to complain about me. A few minutes later the manager fired me for being abrasive with the customers.
