They are better than us. The Palestinians. They are better than us because they see themselves unable to get adequate food and drink for their families, or building supplies to mend demolished homes. The mothers see their children’s lifeless bodies being lifted out of the rubble and taken to morgues then dusty graves. The children see their parents’ mangled flesh knowing they will never feel their love again. And yet they survive. They live on to see another day, to eat another meal and to fight the fight silently, courageously, defiantly. Just to exist is a fight. Just to breathe, just to be. Them just being…means they are stronger than us. Because we occupy ourselves with what doesn’t matter and argue about what is not worth arguing about. And we assume that we are benefiting the world. We are obsessed with fashion, with wealth, with academia, with prestige and jobs and marriage, and the latest ‘Muslim’ social media uproars. We have resources at our fingertips but are paralyzed by cowardice, fear, laziness. We do nothing better than wallow for a moment in sadness over “the state of the ummah” then move on with our meaningless and frivolous lives. God doesn’t change a nation unless they first change themselves. We’ve failed. We’ve failed them and ourselves because we are not good people. We don’t pray as we should. We don’t fast as we should. We don’t give charity as we should. We don’t care as we should. We havent changed ourselves. I worry about my daughter when she has a slight fever while a mother in Gaza right now is worried that her daughter might not live to see another day. And another mother’s heart is empty of everything because she held her dead child in her arms. She wished she could freeze that moment so she wouldn’t have to bury her baby. She wished she could hold her in her arms until the end of time. But she couldn’t. We failed her. Forgive us, our Lord, for what we aren’t able to do, and strengthen us that we may do everything in our power to be agents of change.
