They cry to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses. - Psalm 107:28 Scripture tells us when we "cry out" to God, he delivers us from our "distresses." What we do not know is how or when he deliv- ers. We assume, as well as hope, his deliverance means a change in our circumstances. We want to see that deliverance! As much as we would like to see a change of circumstances as evidence that God is delivering us from our distresses, often our circumstances do not change. Then how can God promise he will deliver us from our distresses? Is there a little clause somewhere that we missed? Is it written in invisible ink? I believe God always delivers us from our distresses just as he promised, but sometimes that deliverance is within our hearts, where the pain of our circumstances has shredded our interior being. God meets us at the shredding place. His deliverance may be simply to give us comfort in that place. His deliverance may be a lifting of our heads . . . of our spirits . . and an assurance that he is there with us. His deliverance may be giving us the knowledge that we will have his strength to endure even though our circumstances may not change.
