They made the choice to move, why should the Australian Government - TopicsExpress

They made the choice to move, why should the Australian Government support them? It is reasonable for Australia to impose certain restrictions on government services for new arrivals to the country. The issue here does not relate so much to new arrivals, but people who have made Australia their home and have contributed over some time to Australian society. Developed countries generally follow the principle that if they allow someone to become a resident, they must grant that person access to government services and the ability to become a citizen after a reasonable waiting period. Indeed, this principle is enshrined in international treaties to which Australia is a party. However, current Australian policy permanently denies these rights to hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders lawfully residing in Australia.
