They put their personal reputations, their assets, the safety of their families and their reputations on the line to sign a document that was considered treason to the British Empire declaring independence. They wanted the freedom to worship without government intervention. They wanted the chance to pursue success without government intervention and wanted to be free of the burdens of a monarchy that could at any moment cut their lives short or take all their possessions. Take time today to honor their sacrifice and honor what they created, and most importantly, remember what we have and what is at risk. Freedom isnt free and we cannot allow the freedoms that were bought with the blood, sweat and tears of our forebears to erode from our grasp.
