They say, If youre not assessing, youre guessing. Its true, I only do one formal assessment with my clients - on their first day with me. Im not there to see how strong they are, how fast they are, or how fit they are. This takes place over the following weeks. Instead I watch how they move. If you cant move properly, how could it be safe for you to test your strength, speed and fitness? When I observe their movements, I can also see if it tires them out or not. I can see if its hard for them, if it requires more strength than theyre used to, and I can see which muscles need more focus on. Whatever the goal, we work towards that, and we also work towards improving weaknesses in the body so that they can achieve their goals. You wont get to Super Hero Crazy Strong status if your abs are too weak to support your lifting. You wont get to Superman Fast Running status if your glutes and hamstrings are too weak to propel you forwards. And you wont get to Mad As Hell Fitness Freak status if you dont have the power to do the training. So instead of asking clients to perform sit and reach tests, stationery bike tests or max leg press tests, I ask them to perform some simple movements that enable me to see their strengths and weaknesses so I can begin to put together a program that will give them results :)
