They say the pen is mightier than the sword. However, for most of humanity who have ever lived, far more important than either pen or sword has been the spade. In the great "poem of creation" described in Genesis, originally there was no need to dig the soil. Afterwards life depended on digging. Poetry depends on all kinds of word play. Puns and metaphor are used and deepen our understanding because they allow ideas to penetrate our subconscious minds. Newspaper writers today constantly use puns and metaphors to enable propaganda to penetrate deeply into our subconscious and bypass our critical faculties. Some of the roots of Quakerism lie with the "Diggers". These people literally used spades to dig for freedom and truth. There is much clamor among those who use the pen urging the use of the sword. Before we do that we should always use the spirit to dig for truth.
