They told her to count to ten. Every time it got too much, when the fire built up in her gut, they said take a breath or calm down. But every breath just fed the fire and the anger twisted, burning in the core of her. When the bile rose and ate at her, they said count to ten and put a lid on it. And it boiled up her throat, coating every inch of her insides in pain and wrath. By the time she was grown, she was a creature of fire and acid, belching smoke and spitting caustic cinders, and she never once reached ten. So they told her she wasnt trying. They put chains round her mouth and filed her claws blunt. No-one told her anger was fuel, not fire. No-one told her rage could be directed. No-one told her that dragons were not the villains of this story. No. The villains all along were the Kings and Queens and Handsome Princes. And count to ten was the first chain they ever put on her. #microfiction
