They wanted to take Kobanê, but they couldn’t ANF / İBRAHİM ASLAN / ERSİN ÇAKSU - KOBANÊ 02.12.2014 14:00:14 YPG/YPJ fighters who repulsed an attack by ISIS gangs using bomb laden vehicles and tanks on 29 November, inflicted heavy blows on the gangs. YPG/YPJ fighters have also taken some positions from the gangs on the south eastern front. Rojvan Kobanê described what happened on 29 November when the gangs came to take Kobanê with Turkish support. He said: That day they wanted to take Kobanê, but it didn’t happen. They couldn’t do it. We counter attacked and took several of their positions.” The resistance in Kobanê is now in its 79th day. All ISIS attacks have been repulsed by the resistance of the YPG/YPJ fighters and the people of Kobanê. The attack mounted from Turkish territory on 29 November was one of the biggest ISIS attacks. The assault started with a bomb laden vehicle crossing from Turkey through the Mürşitpınar Border gate and on the same day ISIS carried out a day-long attack on the city using heavy weaponry, 4 car bombs and suicide bombers. While all the attacks were repulsed, the armoured vehicle that ISIS brought through the border gate exploded on the way in to Kobanê. Advance in spite of intensive attacks ISIS has concentrated its attacks on the south eastern flank of the city, where it mounted an assault on the city using 2 car bombs and 3 tanks supported by artillery. The vehicles and tanks were destroyed by YPG/YPJ fighters, who repulsed the attack and advanced. On the southern front YPG/YPJ fighters advanced, not abandoning their positions even when car bombs were exploding close by. We visited YPG/YPJ positions after the ISIS attacks on 29 November. The damage to houses caused by ISIS artillery and mortar fire is clear to see. However, in spite of this, the YPG/YPJ forces made a major advance on this front. The YPG/YPJ fighters on the south eastern front, just like those on other fronts, show no sign of fatigue despite the conflict that has gone on for over two and a half months. All the fighters we meet greet us with a smile. Despite the ISIS attacks there is no sign of tension as they carry out the duties they are given. Resistance is the only way to exist YPG/YPJ fighters on this front move from building to building through tunnels in order to protect themselves from snipers. When fighters talk about comrades who have fallen they become melancholy, but they know they have fallen in a just cause as they defend their homes. They are aware that sacrifices have to be made. The YPG/YPJ fighters also make detailed analysis of the situation in the Middle East and international politics, in addition to the resistance in Kobanê or the reasons for the attempts to capture it. All of the fighters say that the only way to protect their existence and rights is to resist. They wanted to take Kobanê Rojvan Kobanê, a YPG fighter on the south eastern front, said that ISIS aimed to take Kobanê on 29 November, adding: They wanted to takle the border gate with support from the Turks, but they were unable to do so on account of the resistance of our comrades. They attacked here with a bomb laden vehicle, but our comrades blew it up before it could do any harm. That day they wanted to take Kobanê, but it didn’t happen. They couldn’t do it. We counter attacked and took several of their positions.”
