Theyre called ER Superusers: Regulars who turn up far too often, - TopicsExpress

Theyre called ER Superusers: Regulars who turn up far too often, costing taxpayers money and overburdening doctors and nurses. As a result, Seton has done something about it, creating a first-in-the-country program — which seems to be working. They launched a system wide computer program called High Alert to monitor regulars. With each ER visit costing an average of $2,500, those superusers can add up. When the hospital does not know you or your medical history, they are obligated to do a full workup on the patient. That is time and money. “I don’t think very many of them want to be abusers of the system,” Dr. Chris Ziebell, director of the ER at UMC Brackenridge. “A lot of folks don’t have other resources or think they don’t, and for whatever reason they prefer this environment because they feel we’ve treated them different or better.”
