They’re BACK! By popular demand! Actually, last’s week’s session with Kate and Matthew did not go ahead because the national demo against water charges meant we could not get all the necessary equipment to The Outhouse in time. This time it will be different!!! Focusing on the socialisation of the human use of other animals in contemporary Western society, Matthew Cole & Kate Stewart explore the cultural reproduction of human-nonhuman animal relations in childhood. With close attention to the dominant practices through which children encounter animals and mainstream representations of animals in childrens culture, this presentation and Q&A based on the new book, Our Children and Other Animals, reveals the interconnectedness of studies of childhood, culture and human-animal relations. We recognise that the dominant culture in Ireland is deeply speciesist. Join Matthew and Kate in identifying the social forces that shape children’s ethical views. Most importantly, explore with these authors and researchers what those who want to bring about meaningful change and justice for others can do.
