Things Abuja Women Do For Beauty. N50,000 fee to wash face; N5,000 to fix eyelashes Women in Nigeria are known to engage themselves in several artificial things in pursuit of beauty and elegance. Sometimes, the extent and cost could prove ridiculous, especially in Abuja where most people known to live what residents popularly refer to as ‘false life.’ The pranks of the ladies to buy or enhance beauty come in nail fixing, eyelashes fixing, beauty bath, spa, sauna bath, weavons and wigs for the hair. Although experts in skin care argue that most of the things ladies do for beauty, especially in skin enhancement and bleaching, the people already engrossed in this don’t give a hoot as they spend as much as N50,000 to wash their face with chemicals. Such spending could be for services that don’t last more than 10 minutes. In some beauty spots Abuja Metro visited especially at the metropolis proved that some salons charge as N5000 to fix eyelashes and N10,000 for nails on ladies. Some of the disturbing issues are the fixing of eyelashes, the use of facial massagers and electric washers, which some see to have its side effects to the human body at the long term. Some smaller salons however charge less depending on location and quality of patronage. But generally, most ladies in Abuja rather prefer to pay higher as status indicator. “They come in to ask of the charges and when you give them a cost not so much, they tell you that it is a sign that the pace is of low profile. Such ladies say it is rather befitting to tell friends that I fixed my hair at an exorbitant rate and that boosts their standing,” a salon operator revealed. In some of such smaller places, eyelashes and nails fixing can cost as low as N800 or N1000. Similarly, dermatologists take the greater jobs of face massaging and electric washing of the skin for between. The salon owners agree that patronage of their services usually peak during the weekends and festive periods, a saloon owner Ruth Moses, confirmed. These beauty craze have hit alarming point as some women see most of the trends as irrelevant and dangerous to the body while to some others they are just ok and welcome development and worth the stress. Mrs. Elizabeth Lawal, a businesswoman who expressed her dislike at what the new age ladies are doing for beauty sake said: “I do not want to risk my child to blindness if she punctures her eyes trying to fix lashes or even develop skin cancer because one can never be sure of the chemicals used.” Facial massagers and electric washers most times even tone the skin and remove blemishes and spots. A student, Okechi Jennifer who spoke to Abuja Metro said: “I don’t mind using facial massagers or any other gadget on my skin if I can afford it especially when it doesn’t hurt and makes me prettier.” A member of the Deeper Life Bible Church in Nyanya totally condemned these activities calling them. She argues that: “God created us and saw that we are beautiful and wonderfully made. Why destroy our skin layers, one could get a cancerous disease in later life,” she said. The quest for beauty goes on as every woman competes to be more beautiful than others, however it is an individual choice, even in the middle of the madness among ladies in Abuja.
