Things I Can’t Forget - No.3 When I was in hospital - TopicsExpress

Things I Can’t Forget - No.3 When I was in hospital administration, our hospitals frequently had patients who were transported in by ambulance to our emergency room from nursing homes. They would be covered with bed sores from their own waste, showing their beds had not been tended to for days or even weeks. They were in pain and invariably dehydrated showing a lack of liquid for days, thus requiring I.V.s. We would restore them and discharge them to the same nursing homes, and in a few weeks or months, they would be back with the same problems. Nursing homes are inspected by an office of the state government, usually under Health and Human Services. I made a trip to the state office and talked to the woman in charge. She was quietly defensive. I suggested that they at least stop telling the nursing homes when they were coming to inspect. She said, “Oh, what an interesting idea.” That was the end of that. I did manage to get one nursing home closed. In six weeks, they were open again with no change in “care.”
