Things I discovered today... 1. Ramona lies! There are still a lot of muscadines on your vines, she says. Only if you consider 3 cups a lot. She had already picked probably 10 gallons or more off the vines, so Im surprised that I found that many. Anyone who has ever watched my sister pick anything would understand. Honestly, shed fight a rattlesnake for a cluster of grapes. 2. She does not lie about the fire ants eating you alive! She may fight a rattlesnake, but the fire ants made her throw in the towel yesterday. I decided to be brave and try again today. Note that I am posting this, not outside picking. 3. To find the remaining grapes, you must run the gauntlet of fire ants, red wasps and hornets. This is probably why I only found 3 cups. I have no desire to be found dead in the middle of a bunch of rotten grapes, surrounded by various insects. 4. There is a recipe for canning muscadine juice cocktail that is super easy. It says its delicious. Ill find out in 2 months when its finished making. Hopefully this will not be one of those Pinterest fails. However, if it is, I wont be mad about how much time and money I spent. The muscadines were free. I already had the sugar and jars. I only spent maybe an hour or so making it. If it turns out great, I may never share my muscadines again. 5. Fighting the insects for the muscadines I picked makes me extremely grateful for Mona leaving some of the ones she picked here. We had picked a few gallons together a few days ago, but she did the biggest part of the work. 6. I am quite thankful for all the times we canned stuff with Momma when we were growing up. I thought I didnt know what I was doing, but I guess it really is kinda like riding a bike. I have to guess this because I cant exactly ride a bike...lol. 7. I have to figure out a good place to put all the stuff Ive been canning lately. Guess Ill have to rearrange my cabinets or something. 8. No matter how many muscadines I pick, I will always eat about as many as I put in the bucket. City folks are probably cringing over someone eating something straight off the vine. Country folks know that the best way to eat a fruit or veggie is to wipe the dirt off on your pants leg and commence. 9. Canning food will turn you into a scavenger. While rummaging around this morning for jars, I ran across a coffee pot that I didnt know we had. This wouldnt be nearly as exciting to me since I only drink coffee at work, but Mommas coffee pot just died. I was going to give her one that we got for a wedding present, but now I can give her this one. 10. My husband never throws away anything. OK, I didnt really just discover this today, but some of the things I found while scavenging for jars reinforced this. The good thing about this is that when the girls want to wax nostalgic, we can pull out the glasses from their proms and make them smile.
