Things are no longer at ease for highly trumpeted contenders in the race to succeed Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State next year. This is no thanks to the entry of the Permanent Secretary of the Government House, Asaba, Anthony Obuh, into the race on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. Prior to his entry, top contenders in the race had assumed they would walkover other challengers to succeed the governor. But Obuh, a hardcore civil servant and bureaucrat, who piled his public service trade over the past 15 years in the state, has diplomatically claimed to be the right man for the job. Obuh’s emergence on the political turf has thrown the gauntlet of Ika nation into the theatre of battle among gladiators across the state, especially those from the Delta North Senatorial District, where he hails from. Since Obuh declared for the race, top aspirants, including President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe; the former Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly, Engr. Victor Ochei; the Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa; the incumbent Chief of Staff, Dr. Festus Okubor; Lagos-based multi-millionaire, Chief Peter Okocha; and the chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, Dr. Ngozi Olejeme, have started to make amends on their ultimate dreams. Obuh served under Uduaghan as Permanent Secretary when he was Commissioner for Health and Secretary to the State Government in the administration of former Governor James Ibori. When Uduaghan emerged as governor in 2007, Obuh was moved to the Government House, Asaba as Permanent Secretary. An impeccable source in the Government House, Asaba on Thursdayrevealed to The Eagle Online that Obuh is highly favoured by the powers-that-be in the state. His ambition, the source continued, was said to have been propelled by the powers-that-be in the state, hence professional kite-flyers have littered Asaba metropolis with Obuh’s posters with the inscription: “Right Man for the Right Time for Delta State Governor 2015.”
