Things have changed greatly since I last flew from Schiphol within the common European Schengen area. ( which was in May to Lisbon. Edinburgh is in the UK and thus not in the Schengen area). For starters you need to scan your boarding pass at a row of small gates which is very much like scanning your Public Transportation Card at a metro (underground) station before youre allowed into the security check area. There your hand luggage gets scanned (nothing new there) and get -per tray- seperated into two flows: the first immediately means it has been clearen and you can pick your stuff off the conveyor belt. The other means stuff needs an extra check and leads your cabin luggage to a security officier. And then there are the full body scanning machines which look like sonic showers from Star Trek or something. Feet on the marked spots, arms up in the air and *woosh woosh* something moves around you. After that you step out and get frisked in those areas the bodyscan found suspicious. All very high tech looking and a whole lot faster than it used to be. Also: this time I was spared the annoying act of having to take off my hiking boots
