Things non-horse people need to know: Horses are not dogs. Some dont like to be petted especially by strangers. Many horses dont like their noses petted. Would you or would you rather have somebody pat you on the shoulder? Some horses bite and they bite hard. Many horses can only be ridden by experienced riders. Not every horse is like the ones you can rent at parks, etc. Horses will take advantage of inexperienced riders. They pull all kinds of tricks to get you to go back to the barn and stop riding. Horses are animals of prey and are scared by sudden noises or movements. Even familiar noises can be startling. If a person shows her anxiety around a horse, the horse thinks if shes scared then I should be too. Not every horse is a race horse. Not every rider is a cowboy or cowgirl. There are lots of other riding styles. Horses do step on human feet- usually by accident. It hurts even with boots on so wearing flip flops around horses is never a good idea. I know plenty who are guilty of this. Horses dont vomit and they have delicate digestive systems. Barns do have some smell no matter how much theyre cleaned. Horses are animals after all and they do poop and pee. And lastly, there are plenty of people like me who are horse obsessed and we are perfectly normal even if we have hay in our hair and mud and muck on our boots and horse slobber from kisses on our shirts.
