Things people have suggested I do while on sabbatical: 1. Travel around the world on a container ship 2. Ghost write their book (for free) 3. Rack up volunteer hours at Merricks school 4. Take a nine week Bikram teacher training course (in Thailand) 5. Go to cosmology school to learn hair and make-up 6. Train for a marathon, triathlon or both 7. Learn to sew and knit 8. Convert to the Paleo lifestyle and diet, with all its rigors and work 9. Try my hand (or neck) at stand-up comedy Things I have to do while on sabbatical (or get fired): 1. Write a book (Online By Design: The New Professor and Student) putting the online relationship between student/teacher into historical context -- you know that mythic, myopic, wizened professor who guides Youth story ---and arguing that first, this context no longer exists (although we pretend it does) and second, that the new paradigm for this relationship allows for a wide variety of different, more functional (and realistic) connections between professor and student. 2. Redesign one of my online classes. 3. Create best practices list for online teaching for the college 4. Visit a handful of online classes as a guest 5. Register for and take a MOOC 6. Read a boatload of books, most recently --and quite thrillingly, I will acknowledge -- Education and the Cult of Efficiency. Thins I plan to do while on sabbatical but wont get fired if I dont: 1. Promote At the End of Magic 2. Get my other novel published 3. Write a play for a local theatre company 4. Launch and grow my own writing business (marypetrie) 5. Clean the basement workshop, drawer by drawer 6. Make sure Merrick does not fail 6th grade 7. Get Scarlett through the arduous junior year of high school 8. Maintain house, yard, dogs, and social network 9. Not get divorced. The map of dream, reality and desire, folks. Now, back to that page turner, Cult of Efficiency.
