Things that amaze me about people - #1 ================================ People dont have a grasp on the notion that there is actually an overarching set of rules governing the functioning of what some of us have come to call reality. It is this thing we all share, and dwell within. These rules exist the way they are, despite what any of us think. In the end, it doesnt matter which definition of it we decide to accept or which name we choose to apply, things are what they are. These traits of reality have nothing to do with our thoughts or decisions. This represents the difference - and it is a marked one - between a fact and an opinion. Opinions are far from facts. Opinions are what people think, and what they believe. Facts are immutable aspects of reality which exist regardless of our observation or supposition. Seemingly smart people try to observe and craft their opinions to match what they observe in reality, but there are quite often mitigating factors; often, ones of which no-one is aware. In these cases, it is impossible for opinion to parallel fact, until we know more. How do we know when we know everything and can therefore proceed with our assumptions as facts? We cant. All we can do is persuade each other that this is the case. This is our human fallacy. It is even sometimes the case that it is impossible for us to become aware of every factor, and and in these cases our opinion will only ever be irrelevant. People seem to have a real problem with that.
