Things to know about pipelines: Class distinctions: contrar to intuition, Class 1 Would NOT be the best. Class 1 is the thinest wall, highest pressure, largest blast radius, longest distance between shutoff valves, AND the least regulated. FUll Disclosure the penneast pipeline is supposed to be a Class 2 pipeline which is marginally better HOWEVER Regulation is done by a government agency (PMHSA) NOT the companies that put the pipeline in themselves. That means taxpayers pay for that. HOWEVER even though the taxpayer pays for the monitoring, the PMHSA has been found to be beholden to the INDUSTRY not the public. Please read the NY TIMES article excerpt below: Kathryn Douglass, staff counsel for Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER), has been examining PHMSAs relationship with oil and gas companies. Using information gathered through Freedom of Information Act requests, she recently discovered that more than 99 percent of the meetings high-ranking PHMSA officials attend are with members of the pipeline industry. PHMSA has demonstrated its willingness to bend over backwards for the industry, she told InsideClimate News. It wouldn’t surprise me if they closely involved Exxon in the investigation.
