Think About It Thursday Theres a story going around about a 911 dispatcher telling a person to take the tourniquet off of the amputated leg of a motorcycle accident victim and shortly after they bled out and died. Keep the blood in the body where it belongs. Our body contains an average of around 5 liters of blood. That blood is responsible for carrying oxygen to and removing waste products from the tissues. It also brings vital clotting factors to a site of injury to attempt to stop the bleeding. If a large enough vessel is interrupted, we can lose over 1 liter of blodd (thats 1/5th of our circulating volume) in less than 1 minute with a loss of consciousness in as little as 20 seconds and death in as little as 4 minutes, which means we can die from blood loss almost twice as fast as we will die from a lack of oxygen. Hence, the concentration on stopping any life-threatening hemorrhage first. Losing that much volume will take us into Stage II Shock and there is research that shows that the survivability drops exponentially from Stage I to Stage II or greater; 94% survival rate if bleeding is stopped before going into Stage II and a 14% survival rate if the victim is in Stage II or greater. No matter how you look at it, the bleeding needs to be stopped by the quickest, most efficient methods and by utilizing the products you may have on hand or those you utilize from items in your environment.
