Think about it - I pledge allegiance to the flag - allegiance - TopicsExpress

Think about it - I pledge allegiance to the flag - allegiance means unthinking obedience - of the United States of America - as if no other nation has any right existing - and to the republic for which it stands - our Congress is certainly nothing to brag about, our votes dont count in a Republican Congress - one nation indivisible (we fought a war about this - people tend to forget - its one nation, not 50 independent states), with liberty and justice for all (when we have the largest prison population for minority non-violent offenders in the world.) Under God - which one - from its foundation we have had our leaders who are Deist, Christian, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Free-Thinkers, Quakers, Masons, Unitarian, Baptists, Obeyah, Voudoun, Cree, Dine, Ojibwa, Manitou, Hopi - to name a few. I hesitate to pledge to a flag which holds so many contradictions. I can pledge to an ideal, but the ideal is so missed every day that I am surprised there arent more flag-burnings (the proper way to dispose of a flag when it is no longer suitable for public display). I am torn, and my ancestors and family have served proudly in the Armed Forces, Im Navy ROTC by training, and yet I mourn. I pledge allegiance to an ideal that is not just American, but is universal, based on many flags, many nations, many ways of peace, and that is very hard to articulate.
