The majority of Americans who voted for Congress in the last election voted for Democrats, but we have a strong Republican majority in the House anyway, one that because of clever districting sees no need to compromise or even participate reasonably and responsibly in government. If because of clever districting and voter suppression a popular majority begins to feel that it cannot express its majority status at the polls, then confidence in our society will be debased, frustration will rise, social trust will diminish, and social order will begin to break down. I fear that is our trajectory already. We are too clever by half.]
