Think back to all of the small independent businesses that were here in Marshall when we were young. There were almost countless service stations, many independently-owned drug stores, a number of barbershops, several jewelry stores, small cafes, scores of neighborhood grocery stores, two mens stores, a ladies hat shop, five or six laundries, multiple shoe stores, hardware stores, lumber companies, three banks, three savings and loan associations etc. These home-owned businesses promoted the entrepreneurial spirit within our town with businessmen who chartered their own courses and held the respect of the community -- just like small towns all around the country. I think the loss of these independent businesses has caused a reduction in the spirit of commerce throughout our country, enhancing the propensity to follow along with the crowd,
