Think back to the time when you were younger, getting your first how-to in the kitchen. Presumably you were eager to learn new things, nervous about making mistakes and determined to make Momma proud. Who could forget the best part? Licking the spoon! Ahh, those were the good old days; when making a mess was still delicious fun and we were not afraid of being creative. While growing up, sisters Katherine Kallinis and Sophie Lamontagne began helping their grandmother in the kitchen at an early age. Baking all sorts of treats and even assisting with dinner, the girls gained insight on family recipes as they developed goals of their own. Desserts remained one of the most enjoyable dishes to create, and so to make their delicious hobby practical, the girls decided that one day they would open their very own bakery to spread appreciation for grandma’s unique treats. Who knew that the bakery would one day become the infamous Georgetown Cupcakes!? Katherine and Sophie both attended colleges in the DMV area. The sisters enjoyed the persona of the city, as well as admired the capacity that small business ‘Ma & Pop Shops’ maintained being able to compete with national retailers. In 2007 the women decided it was time to take action! They wondered if not now, then when? Without letting another opportunity pass them by, the women organized a business proposal to market their vision and set a direction that allowed the bakery to operate as a family business. Since Valentine’s Day of 2008 guests have been lining up, often times around the corner, to enjoy fresh soft and moist gourmet cupcakes that can only be found at one of the Georgetown Cupcake locations. Out growing their original location at 3301 M St NW DC; the deliciousness spread from Bethesda, MD all the way to Los Angeles, California. The family brand name now has six shops in operation! It didn’t take long for community members and media sources to acknowledge the attention the bakery was getting. In 2010 cable network station TLC offered the family one season of reality television. The aim was to illustrate day to day operations, detail the hierarchy of the family business as well as to get a behind the scenes look at how to create the perfect cupcake. This is when business sky rocketed and the family business began to spread across the nation. To keep the selection fresh, each month GT Cupcake sponsors different themes of flavors and decor to match seasonal holidays and other community events. This month the bakery is offering one of kind mouthwatering creations such as caramel apple, double butterscotch chip and cinnamon coffee crumb. These business owners are constantly giving back to the community. For the past couple years GT Cupcake has sponsored various local charitable causes; the Children’s National Medical Center located in DC has received supportive funds from the bakery. GT Cupcake continues to give back to the DMV area to show appreciation for all that the city has given this family business. In less than a decade the DC community has watched this bakery grow from a small family owned business into a national televised phenomenon. Even if you aren’t located in one of the major cities where GT Cupcakes can be found; the website offers online ordering and cookbooks that allow you to bring home the deliciousness to start family traditions of your own.
