Think globally, act locally. Practically everyone’s heard it in reference to ecology. It’s the slogan to remind us to recycle, to plant trees, not litter, and any of a long list of things. But…. What if that over used slogan was used in reference to humanity? We, as a society, have a tendency to not see the trees for the sake of the forest. We seem to think that the only way we can make a difference is if we do these huge, grandiose things. We have to protest Monsanto! We have to protest with the Occupy people! It’s only change if it’s big! It’s only good enough if it’s massive! Here’s the thing… Society is made up of individuals, just like the forest is made up of individual trees. What if changing the life of one individual in a positive way counted as positive change? We’ll happily go to protests and shout at the world and then get home and ignore the elderly neighbor with the broken foot who’s struggling to take out trash over a sheet of ice. If you change the life of just one, it affects the whole. Let’s think of it like math. You’ve got 3+4+7. Now let’s say that you’ve got 3.15+4+7. Not a huge difference. But it does change the final answer. As long as we are ALL part of society, that means that all of us affect the grand total. If one person’s life changes, then the total of us all changes. Perhaps it’s time to give up going to the protests so much and shouting about the world. Perhaps it’s time to see your neighbor struggling through the snow and actually change their world. Perhaps it’s time to see that through helping the individuals, we help all. After all, how could we possibly save a forest by ignoring the health and well being of the individual trees? Yes, absolutely think about global change for society. Those things deserve careful consideration and thought. But start acting with the individuals around you.
