Thinking about Acts 2:42... I have to admit the consumer driven - TopicsExpress

Thinking about Acts 2:42... I have to admit the consumer driven church has found some pretty creative ways to provide their clients a large variety of options and conveniences. These new churches have the option of grape juice or wine, MasterCard or Visa and even the choice of service times and methods to go with their coffee. My kids who are working to plant a church said the message they heard this past Sunday while visiting one of these was all about how one elder met the other elder and they really connected. Funny I thought worship was about Jesus Christ crucified, risen and coming again! I thought it was about our establishing a connection with Him. I wonder if the congregants they observed would still go to their meetings if the Acts 2:42 essentials is the only attraction. Today so many think that shortcuts, ease of service, and entertainment are the essentials to growth. Their services are a smorgasbord of non-essentials much like a convenience store with little of nutritional value being offered. But what about the essential ingredients of the Apostles doctrine, the breaking of bread, fellowship and prayer? None of these were ever considered convenient, entertaining or ever strictly designed to benefit the individual on the go. The first century type of worship was often accomplished at great risk, required personal sacrifice and lasted a while. Today so many are looking for easier ways for individuals to do church while the early Christians looked for ways to corporately be the church. So I wonder would these people ever go to services knowing that only the Acts 2:42 essentials where on the schedule? I wonder would they think that kind of service required to much of them? I pray our churches will return to the essentials and keep the main thing the main thing. I pray we will strive to be the church and truly learn what it means to corporately worship God His way.
