Thinking about Laurie Frink, who through her dedication and care - TopicsExpress

Thinking about Laurie Frink, who through her dedication and care was an essential catalyst to my becoming a professional musician and, perhaps more importantly, a New Yorker. Laurie passed away this weekend, and the news came as a surprise to many, including myself. She was my mentor, and very much a mother-figure to me in my early years of being in New York City, which now seems like a lifetime ago. Aside from being an undisputed master of brass technique, a "doctor", if you would, of all problems pertaining to the physicality of brass playing, she was also a huge proponent of raw creativity, expanding the borders of music, and that was reflected in her own practice. She was always doing something new with her music. She was also a great connector of people, I could go on and on. I am in no way ashamed to say that there were times that I would go to her Upper West Side studio for a trumpet lesson and just cry for an hour straight. She could hang with that, and that was heavy. Many, many people are missing you, Laurie.
