Thinking about New Years Resolutions? The way you word your goals - TopicsExpress

Thinking about New Years Resolutions? The way you word your goals plays a significant role in determining whether youll succeed or fail at them. Standard checklist goals are pass/fail (e.g., lose 30 pounds or read 10 books). Youve either accomplished them or not. That means youre forced to live in an almost constant state of failure. Think about it, every morning you get out of bed and stand on the scale only to see that you havent yet lost 30 pounds. Negative self-talk ensues. Im such a failure. This is never going to work. This is taking forever. This becomes very demoralizing. Instead focus on process/habit improvement goals. Rather than setting a goal to lose 30 pounds, set a goal to Eat one whole fruit per day. Instead of Read 10 books, set a goal to Read 1 sentence before bed daily. This sets you up for perpetual success. Yahoo! I did it! Im awesome! Mission accomplished 10 days in a row! 36 days in a row! 89 times! 153 times! etc. If you feel like doing more, great! Some days you will. And some days you wont, but youll still feel the momentum of ongoing success. This is much more motivating and sustainable.
