Thinking about be kind to s lawyer day and what it means to serve as a criminal defense lawyer today... A defense lawyers job is twofold: one, as a threshold matter, to make sure the government hasnt broken the law. Two, to make sure the government can actually prove that you acted in such a manner that you shouldnt be at liberty, that you should be separated from your family, your home, and your employment. That you should lose the right to student loans. That you should lose the right to vote. That you should lose the right to live in the home of the free. A defense lawyer makes sure these freedoms which we take for granted, and which others have died for so we may be granted those rights, are not stripped arbitrarily. lawyers are the great equalizers. In a society that espouses innocence until proven guilty in theory and railroads defendants publicly until acquitted, I can think of no more noble profession than those who would stand in front of their clients, publicly, and serve as the shield against shortcuts. Let us not forget our judges. I can think of no task greater in weight than determining the guilt or innocence of another human being, and the meting out of justice accordingly.
