Thinking about feeling something new. See, its like this: plans. Schedules. To Do Lists. Things To Do Before You Die. And so on. Why are they always about achievements *first*? Why are the effects of those achievements on you always relegated to a distant second? For example: - GOAL: write a book OK. But...why? What is that process going to give you, not just the material benefits but the emotional ones too? A massive sense of accomplishment? The satisfaction of sharing that idea in your head that you are utterly enraptured with, right now? A feeling of doing that thing youve always promised yourself you should do? A really sensible business decision that will carve a big solid chunk of finally-fulfilled potential out of all that terrifying uncertainty ahead of you that feels just the right amount of risky? The desperate need to at least *try* to outsell Dan Brown and prove that you have some part of the antidote to the worlds collective madness? And so on. So heres a great idea for a schedule, to do list, Things To Do Before Its Too Late: map out how you want to *feel*, stick it down on paper, and try to act around that, constantly. Youll probably do a lot of the same things, but youll know *why* youre doing them. And that way, youre less likely to choose something that will make you feel dead inside, while (hopefully) remaining pragmatic enough to pick something that wont have you starving to death next winter. It all hangs together. Put your feelings first. And then see what happens. It might just work out. (I had a whisky, yes. It was only a small one though. Cant blame the whisky this time.)
