Thinking about things back in the day and wrote this: 10 things I learned in Troop 128 1. Dont tell. Show. I learned so much, but I dont remember being taught so much as I remember observing. An extreme example was the “no open flames in the tent” demonstration where a miner tent went up in a flash! 2. Take a group of people and tell them they are a team and then have them play a game and they will play hard together. Beaver Patrol! 3. Leadership is convincing an 11-year old to leave his tent at the break of day in the rain to collect firewood. 4. Some nights when there is nothing to do, there is an AMAZING METEOR SHOWER! 5. Police will disregard most traffic violations if there are three uniformed Boy Scouts in the car. 6. If you take Tenderfoots on a snipe hunt, dont loose sight of them or youll spend the rest of the night tracking them down. 7. Bamboo will explode if you put it in a bonfire. 8. If a mouse runs up the pant leg of fellow scout, dont kick the mouse. 9. Running a successful scout troop takes more wisdom and deviousness and paperwork than one would ever imagine. 10. Spending relatively few days of a handful of years in a good scout troop can be indescribably enriching.
