Thinking about visiting Australia soon? Where would you like to go? Perth - This city generally has great weather all year, and receives very little rain. It is sometimes called The Windy City because despite being warm the coastal area receives a lot of wind, giving it ideal conditions for surfing and wind-surfing. Perth citizens are often very relaxed and welcoming of foreign people and there are many parks, lakes and outdoor activities. Melbourne - This is one of Australias two largest cities, Melbourne is known to be very multicultural because it is the home of many foreign people from all over the world. Some of the architecture resembles places in Europe and often the weather can be similar to European weather, becoming quite cold and rainy in the winter but still warm in the summer. Melbourne is also known for good night-life. Sydney - The Sydney Harbor Bridge and Opera House are two of the most recognized Australian landmarks and The Opera house is the 3rd biggest opera company in the world. Sydney is Australias largest city with a population of almost 5 million people and it is also the largest sector of economic activity, 60 of the 100 largest companies in Australia are located in Sydney. Canberra - This is the capital city of Australia, however it is only a small city with a population of less than 400 000. The Australian people, unable to decide which of the largest cities should be the capital out of Sydney and Melbourne decided to build a city between the two, so that it could house the countrys politicians. This city is known for its museums and art and is close to some of the only areas that get snow during the short winter. Brisbane - Brisbane is Australias 3rd largest city and one of its warmest, the city center is located only 80km (about 1 hour drive) from the Gold Coast which is one of the most famous beach areas in the world. It is the largest city in Queensland which is a very tropical area, also home to Cairns which is a popular tourist destination where you can go swimming on the beach even in winter because it remains very warm. Adelaide - The largest city of South Australia, it is sometimes called The City of Churches because there are many old churches to visit with very interesting and old fashioned architecture, this is rare in Australia because the country has a very short history. Adelaide is also known for its large glasshouses where many interesting species of plants that are not local to the climate can be found. Darwin - Darwin is only a small city situated to the north of the Northern Territory in Australia. With a population of slightly over 100 000 it is very isolated and yet still the largest city in the Northern Territory, this area of Australia is extremely hot and dry and is known for tough but friendly people who do not mind extreme heat and are welcoming of visitors.
