Thinking about volunteering at Arcadia Farm? Heres a taste of the weekly update youll get from our fearless, peerless Farm Team leader (she refuses the title captain) Kat: The leeks are coming, the leeks are coming! Just kidding, Farm Team - the leeks are here and ready to be transplanted to the awesome trenches that Peggy, Kathy D. and Heidi dug last week. The plan is to get them in Wednesday morning between 8 and noon so if you have room in your schedule, come on out and help - theres lots! I hear that kale, spinach, swiss chard and onions are also on the list for fall planting. Then theres harvesting ... I didnt get a photo, but Sunday evening we filled up container after container of bounty. New volunteer Lucie spent two hours picking beans and said there were still more to be found before pitching in with Whitney and Samantha to fill up two huge boxes of tomatoes. Kathy D. rescued peppers out from under the amazing cheese wheel pumpkin plant (if you havent been out to Arcadia lately, you need to come see this thing. It is well on its way to taking over more than half of Field A). Of course, no Farm Team Update can go out without mentioning weeds. Oh how they vex us! But, Arcadia remains committed to being chemical free and now as no till as possible. The price for that is more labor - thank goodness for our volunteers. Dont be shy about weeding vigorously in that upper right corner of Field B, its a great substitute for a trip to the gym. We are in the process of smothering weeds on the road side of Field A, a layer of newspaper/cardboard covered by wood chips. A little over half has been completed (thank you 7th grade field trip, Lee, Lammot and Kathy D.) but weve run out of newspaper so if you have some, please bring with you when you come! For veggie trivia, lets talk a little about lima beans. Never having seen them in the pod, I made the assumption that if the pod was the right size, I should pick it. Wrong! For all you future lima bean pickers (and those of you who are just curious), when picking lima beans, one must look for the lumps. Please use this photo as a guide. Note that the top pod has little tiny limas while the lower has large lima lumps. We love large the larger limas! More veggie trivia? Arcadias Diva chickens do not like okra .... Unfortunately, I have to head out of town so I wont be hosting Wednesday afternoons this week or next. Dont let that stop you though, I am happy to cheer you on via email if you need motivation. We are only a few weeks away from the end of the season, dont wait too long, winter weather isnt too far off. Thanks to everyone for your support and hard work. Go Team! Upcoming: Mondays and Wednesdays TIME CHANGE!!!!!! now 8am - noon, volunteer with Farmer Peggy and learn as you hoe!
