Thinking of my amazing dad, George von der Schmidt on Veterans Day. He was a VERY proud American and incredibly patriotic. Lived to tell how he was captured along with the other men and became ill & starved in a German prison camp. Having a German last name of somewhat nobility (deemed a traitor) only lead to his incredibly horrible treatment in the prison camp. He soon realized that if he didnt do something, he would die there...He got a guards uniform (we dont need to explain how), stole a guard dog that he befriended slowly over time by giving some of his meal portions to, and with his fluent German, posed as a prison guard helping himself and several other Americans escape safely back to the American lines.
