Thinking of the young girls killing themselves as they are hounded for their friendships with boys and how all of us can identify with the suffocation of that moral gaze. Every call from a boy, every outing earned a sideways look, a grim expression whose weight I struggled to ignore. I would valiantly try to be normal as I spoke to or even about my friend. But I felt pressured to act extra innocent to prove that it was innocent. That averted gaze made me feel these very natural friendships-maybe-attractions were somehow sleazy and my every feeling had to be accounted for.
