Thinking through the other side of the coin when it comes to MPD....I often hear about an efficiency study that stated Memphis had too many officers when compared to other cities of similar size. The study determined that an acceptable minimum number of police would be 2,637. If you look at the 2015 budget, there are 2,696. The BIG misrepresentation here is that of the 2,696, only 2,569 (well below the minimum acceptable number)are actually FILLED....while 127 are vacant (and in some cases frozen with no intention of filling). And my guess is that number will decrease even more with the recent pension cuts.
