Third Reason; Present Sense Prologue 4:30pm. October. English Midlands. A man wearing a dark blue parka, black trousers, white shirt and tie. He stands at the corner of St Andrews Road and the pathway that leads down to the Science Park. His black hair is thick and his face is neither uber handsome or ugly. Unremarkable in overall appearance, really. Beside his right foot, placed on the ground, is a hard metal case, about the size of an airline-allowed carryon bag. The day is quite breezy. His hair gets ruffled in the wind. He puts his hands into his trouser pockets, as though to protect them from the slight chill in the air. Hell need his hands to be warm for his next move. His fingers retain better dexterity when theyre at the right temperature. No ones hands work well when cold. The sky is titanium grey, trying its best to rain, but every drop gets shoved back up into the cumulus due to tail end hurricane flurries that have seeped in from west of the Atlantic. A nondescript silver van stops in front of the ordinary man. He picks up the case by his foot. Both man and case get into the van. The van is driven away with its new occupant inside. When the van travels not 100 metres, it explodes into a massive fireball that shreds the face and windows of the two houses opposite either side of the road. Screams erupt from nearly every place nearby, but no one can yet be seen as having ownership to these panicked voices. Moments later and vehicle response sirens blare, adding to the noise and chaos now reigning on this residential street. All except for behind one curtained window, ten doors down the way. She looks out from behind a moulded screen. The grimy curtain slips from her gloved finger, shrouding the inside of the abandoned cottage into further decrepit darkness. Her work here is nearly complete. The enemies have been burnt to a crisp. Now the only task that remains is to collect the metal case, which she knows is still intact. She knows this because she is the true owner of the fire resistant case. And shes about to get it back.
