Thirteen year old Connemara pony Comet was referred to Chine House - TopicsExpress

Thirteen year old Connemara pony Comet was referred to Chine House in October having been found stuck in a muddy ditch all night. He had to be removed by the fire brigade and was exhausted and very lame, with several cuts including a large laceration that involved the cannon bone, fetlock joint and digital flexor tendon sheath of the right hind. Even after scrubbing, the wounds remained deeply impregnated with mud. After emergency treatment for dehydration, he was taken to surgery to debride the wounds and flush the infected synovial structures. The day after surgery he was comfortable on his leg but developed a potentially life-threatening abnormal heart rhythm, which was treated in conjunction with Dr Gayle Hallowell of Nottingham Uni using a novel drug. Thankfully, after several days of treatment, his heart rate and rhythm returned to normal and finally he was ready to go home. His own vet has been looking after him since being discharged from the hospital and tending to his wound which has come on leaps and bounds. Merry Christmas to Comet and his owner from the Chine House equine team, and we hope he keeps away from ditches in 2015!
