Thirteen years ago, this morning, I sat with Andrew Heath in the vestry room at Church of the Holy Communion watching the unthinkable happen live on an old console TV. Ten years ago this morning, after a fantastic going away party the night before at Blind Tiger with my family, friends, and Kappa Alpha Order brothers (and Rachel Stanyarne Reid a pirate wench costume), I got on a plane to go do my duty as an Army Reservist in Iraq. As I was heading to the airport that morning, Sean Andrew Weeks gave me his uncles zippo lighter from Vietnam and Panama saying bring this back to me, yourSELF. It was my constant companion that entire deployment. I made some amazing friends that deployment, including the hooligans in the pictures below. I also lost a few friends: Douglas E. Kashmer (Nippur, 08Jun2005); Brian R. Conner, Samuel M. Boswell, & Bernard E. Ceo (Taji, 14Oct2005) The last decade has been rocky, to say the least. I dont think Id be here today if it werent for the constant support of my family, church, and -in the last several years- my fiancee, Caroline. Im grateful to all of you who have stood by me in good times and bad. Im even more thankful that Hidden Wounds has recently given me a chance to really jump in and help other veterans avoid some of the crises that happened to me on my return.
