Thirty Years Ago this Wednesday, the Marine Barracks in Beirut. Lebanon, was attacked by a suicide truck bomber. America at that time had little experience with this sort of tactic. Sadly, we wold have many more occasions to learn of the murderous intent and effectiveness of such zealots. Ten years ago, on the twentieth anniversary, I wrote a short piece and included a list of all those who gave their lives in Lebanon -- most were lost in the barracks bombing, but there were quite a few heroes who were killed before and after the bombing. God Bless them all and keep their loved ones. I was working at Camp Lejeune, NC the day the bombers struck. I had helped train the leadership team of the Marine unit that was attacked, as I had the one that sailed to relieve them. I knew several of those who died and some who were wounded that day. My daughter babysat for one of the Marines children--he lived just down the street. This was personal...really personal. If you havent been a Marine or if you havent worked alongside them, then it will be difficult to understand just how close is the bond among Marines--A Band of Brothers is the description that I find most apt. There really is a bond like family within the Corps. It doesnt fade with the passing of the years. This October 31st (2003) marks the 36th anniversary of my first day in Marine Boot Camp--and I still get chills when they play the Marine Corps Hymn. By the day of the Beirut bombing, I had been a civilian almost seven years--but was probably more involved with the real Marine Corps than I had been in the nine plus years I served. I worked every day training Marines for war--a war we all hoped would never come. But it did, and does, and will again. My first day in the Marine Corps was not my first day as a Marine, because that honored title is conferred only upon graduation from basic training. Until that proudest of passages, one is only a recruit (note the little r) or a maggot or any of a host of pejorative names. To become a Marine is a distinction that remains for a lifetime. Once a Marine...Always a Marine is trite, but true. Semper Fidelis is our motto and it goes deeper than mere words. It is an expectation, a pledge, a way of life. To those who left their blood in the soil of Lebanon, Marines, soldiers, and sailors alike I salute you and the families who made you who you were: Semper Fi, my brothers. Ill never forget you. I still have my flag that they handed out to each participant at the memorial service in Jacksonville. I hope to have it placed in my casket when the time comes for me to join you. Theres a monument that stands outside the front gate of Camp Lejeune, honoring those who fell in Beirut that terrible day. It will be there when all who lived on have crept beneath the earth and joined your ranks. Until that last Marine has passed, I know that there will be a living monument in his/her heart, for you and all like you live on in us, my brothers. Unlike the 911 victims, each of these heroes volunteered to go into harms way to help preserve peace in a war ravaged land. These men went, not to wage war, but to bring peace. They gave what our great president, Abraham Lincoln, once called the last full measure of devotion. They did not seek death, but neither did they flee from it.
