Thirty five years ago, I had recently relocated to Tampa, FL, started a new job and most importantly on November 1 began my early celebration for my 26th birthday. Back in the day, November 1 - 5 was considered by me, days that I had a reasonable excuse to go out, have a few drinks and dance my butt off in preparation of and after my November 3rd birthdate. Believe me, those kind of birthday celebrations are distant memories now! During that timeframe back in the fall of 1979, the song that Ive posted was a raging smash hit in all of the discothèques. It came out of nowhere, sung by a complete unknown to the recording industry and even more amazing was the fact that this unknown amazing vocalist was only 16 YEARS OLD! Her name is FRANCE JOLI and she is French-Canadian and this song Come To Me was written specifically for her and was just one track off of her self-titled debut album, which I, of course, rushed out to purchase. I would have bet anything at that time that she would become the next Streisand, destined for super stardom but I was wrong. This song would become the single biggest and most memorable hit of her ongoing career. Now amazingly, there is a Donna Summer connection according to Wikipedia to her rise to fame back in 1979; the track Come to Me received a boost when Joli performed it as a last-minute replacement for Donna Summer at a concert held on Fire Island on July 7, 1979 before an estimated audience of 5000. So, step back in time with me tonight, back to what now can be called a simpler time, a time when going out to dance was a part of our culture. It was a glorious time to be 25 years old and turning 26 on 11/03 was just another reason for me to go out. have fun and celebrate my youth! Enjoy Frances performance from the Midnight Special on October 26, 1979. Remember that TV program with Wolfman Jack? By the way, Loni Jones, I think I gave you my France Joli album along with my Donna Summer albums when I moved to Denver a few years later? I hope you continued to dance to them from time to time over the last 35 years! :-) youtu.be/vcIXBJJeozM
