Thirty five youths have been arrested as police intensify investigations into an attack on Mandera Governor Ali Roba’s motorcade. A police source said yesterday they are questioning people to identify the bandits behind the Wednesday morning attack. The officer did not want to be named following the directives by Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo preventing police from speaking to the media. “We carried out a swoop in which we arrested 35 people and a special team comprising of Anti-Terror Police, Criminal Investigation Officers and the Intelligence officers is screening the suspects,” said our source. We expect to zero in on the perpetrators because nobody was seen by the people around the scene running away immediately after the explosion,” the officer said. The source said security in Mandera town has been enhanced. “There is a mutual relationship between the police and the local people, unlike in the past, and we believe their assistance will lead to arrest of the perpetrators,” the source said. The officer said the attack is believed to be done by locals. The source said there is no need of giving the Mandera Governor more police officers for his security. “We will only retrain officers to enable them cope with the dynamics of the insecurities because perpetrators are improving their skills,” said the officer. The source denied accusation by Governor Roba that the police have failed in their duty to provide security. “Investigation is long process which takes time and people have to understand that,” said the source. “A crime cannot happen now and we conclude investigation the next minute.” On Wednesday, Roba blamed the police for failure to provide a single report of the four attacks that have been aimed at him.
