Thirty-two more auto-gates, or automatic passport screening - TopicsExpress

Thirty-two more auto-gates, or automatic passport screening machines, will be installed at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumui Airport, increasing the total to 48, and eight more at each of the country’s two other major airports. The 16 auto-gates already in operation, which cost 76 million baht, were split equally between the departure and arrival halls at Suvarnabhumi, Immigration Bureau commissioner Pol Lt Gen Pharnu Kerdlarpphon said on Tuesday. The additional machines will bring the total in each hall to 24 and speed up the immigration process for Thai passport holders, thereby cutting the immigration queues for other visitors to the country. The expanded service is expected to be operational by late January. The bureau and Airports of Thailand will also install eight more machines at both Don Mueang and Phuket airports. Passengers insert the first page of their passport in the machine, wait for the gate to open then stand on the mark to have their picture taken and fingerprint scanned. The process takes less than a minute and with more passport scanning machines to be installed at arrival and departure halls of the three international airports, it will free up immigration officers who are needed to man counters for international passengers.
