This 12 minute segment from last weeks Science Friday program on NPR is a must-listen segment for those interested in the role of the micro biome (gut bacteria) in human health. Using the artificial sweetener saccharine, researchers found that use at its maximum daily consumption recommendation raised blood sugar in susceptible individuals and altered the microbiome. When they transferred the gut bacteria from the people to sterile mice, then fed them saccharine, the mice glucose levels were raised. For people who had their glucose levels raised by saccharine, the gut bacteria changes were noticeable and consistent. The people study only lasted a week, so the changes happened very fast. They did not test other artificial sweeteners yet on people, but in mice, aspartame and sucralose also raised serum glucose levels. sciencefriday/segment/09/19/2014/artificial-sweeteners-might-sour-your-microbiome.html
