This 13th century letter from father to son is one of thousands of scrolls found buried in mud in Russia. Etched into birch-bark and written in Old Novgorod (a precursor to Russian), they include inventories of goods, accusations of crimes, convoluted discussions of legal disputes, personal letters among family and friends, even love letters... giving historians a delightful peek into the everyday life of the ancient people of Novgorod.
