This 1959 shot along Orleans Avenue, looking away from the River, is as notable for what Aint Dere No More as for what is there now. Many of these family-owned shops – smack dab in the middle of the Tremé Neighborhood – are long gone, as is the neutral ground so wide people used to diagonal park on it. Two blocks in the background, today runs the infamous elevated Claiborne Expressway, cited by many as pivotal in this areas economic and social downturn around that time and since. To the photographers immediate right stands the modern-day Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts.
