This Adrian Peterson case brings up a very important dialog. There is a wide range on what Americans consider child abuse vs. appropriate and healthy discipline. Lots of folks still havent evolved into the 21st century on this stuff. Its still normal to spank kids. Let me be clear in my own view-- corporal punishment is proven as ineffective, detrimental, and psychologically damaging. It doesnt matter what a kid is doing, for how long, or where, or how many times over, dont hit them. Sure almost all of us got spanked and turned out fine. But we didnt turn out fine because we got hit. Do the research, read the studies, understand the impact. Its never right to hit a kid. Thats about the parent losing patience, not helping your kid develop better behavior. Violence isnt proper modeling. Dont take my word for it. Research it. Its an old and deep rooted mentality, from lots of well intended but misinformed people, we must evolve on as a society. Kids can be little assholes and parenting can seem to have no good answer sometimes. But theyre kids. Teach, dont hit, ever.
