This Beyonce thing concerns me. Theres a generation of young ladies(and some men)who I fear, are following without paying attention to the signs. Im especially concerned with younger females who are trying to be like her rather than building their own personal esteem and educating and empowering themselves. Trust me, those character traits will become very appealing and more long lasting. My values on this are not popular. In fact, Ive been accused of hating. But I wont compromise my convictions or be brainwashed by pop culture unknowingly. We are overloaded with images of light skinned, scantily clad women with minimal talent. Our children wanna be like them, instead of being themselves. That disturbs me. Assimilation and integration have benefits but they also have side effects. Just because its profitable, doesnt mean its purposeful. Theres less focus on education, values, character, good habits or hard work. Which we all know is required for the majority of us to succeed in life, no matter what race you are. We (African Americans) tend to push our kids to be rappers, singers, in the NFL or NBA much more than careers they are more likely to achieve. They have a better chance of becoming a doctor than an NBA player. Its true. Google the numbers. But we wont promote that. Its easier to turn on the TV and assume the role of a celebrity than it is to challenge ourselves and study a craft and or graduate. Faith is an action word. Its a free country and we have the right to free expression and free enterprise. Im grateful I live in America. Im glad Im a woman. And Im especially glad Im a black woman! But the Bey thing just isnt for me. Dont misunderstand me, I dont dislike Beyonce Knowles. Shes a smart business woman. Ive got a couple of her CDs But shes an entertainer, not a lifestyle to influence me. And as popular as she is, I think shes actually damaging the esteem of some young black women. What we look like often determines how we feel about ourselves. Sad but true. Its taken me a while to talk about this because folks are passionate about this woman. She has established a loyal following. I respect that. But I respect my opinions, and they are just that: My opinions. #educatenothate #expressyourself #gottabeme
