This Christmas Eve in 1968 the Apollo 8 astronauts read from the Book of Genesis while orbiting the Moon. They were the first humans to see the Earth from afar and it moved them deeply. It had been a year that shook the soul of the nation, from the North Korean seizure of the USS Pueblos 82-man crew and the Communist Tet Offensive in Vietnam to the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy, the Chicago riots at the Democratic National Convention, the Soviet Unions invasion of Czechoslovakia, a bitter Presidential Election campaign and much more. The Apollo 8 crews reading from Genesis to an estimated TV audience of 1 billion people ended this terrible year on a much-needed high note. And so, from the crew of Apollo 8, said flight commander Frank Borman, we close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you -- all of you on the good Earth. https://youtube/watch?v=XEmn0uaQCYc
